Couples Therapy in Edinburgh

I work with couples building relationships that don't run on a default script — including queer, non-binary, and ENM or kink-aligned couples navigating their own negotiated structures, agreements, and ways of being together. Whatever structure you've built together, I take it seriously on its own terms.

Couples Therapy

How I work

Couples work is usually more structured than my individual work. I typically offer a focused block of around 10 sessions, aimed at understanding what's actually happening between you and making real, practical shifts within that time. Some couples want to continue beyond that on an ongoing basis, and that's an option too, but it's the exception rather than the default.

I pay close attention to what's happening beneath the argument, what your body language is doing, the tension in the room, the pattern underneath the specific disagreement. I'll name what I'm noticing directly, I'm comfortable being fairly active in sessions. What I'm tracking isn't whether you fight, or how intensely becuase conflict, even loud conflict, isn't in itself a problem. What I'm listening for is whether there's still real care underneath it. Couples who are struggling but still fundamentally on each other's side tend to do well with a direct, involved style of working. Couples where contempt has taken over and where the fighting has stopped being about repair, are a harder fit for how I work. I'll be honest with you early on if that's what I'm seeing.

Is this the right fit?

This work suits couples who want a focused period to understand what's actually happening between them, not an open-ended process. It suits people willing to be looked at honestly, including when that's uncomfortable. If you're both, in some sense, still trying even if it doesn't feel that way most days. That's usually enough to start from.
